The Gate Drill

Putting makes or breaks your round. You can crush drives and stick approach shots, but if you’re missing putts, your scorecard will show it. That’s why the “Gate Drill” is a must-have in your practice routine. It’s simple, effective, and will tighten up your stroke fast.

Here’s how it works.

First, grab two tees and aim stick, then head to the practice green. Pick a straight, flat putt about 5 to 10 feet from the hole. Use the aim stick to line up your putt and lay the first tee on the the ground just outside the toe of your putter. Place the second tee just outside the heel. Leave a little space between the tees so your putter can swing freely without touching them.

This “gate” shows if your stroke is solid and straight. If your putter clips the tees, your stroke is off track. The goal is to swing through the gate cleanly while keeping your putter face square to the target.

Start with a few practice strokes to get the feel. Then roll putts through the gate and into the hole. Pay attention to your alignment, tempo, and follow-through. If the putter touches the tees, adjust until your stroke is smooth and straight.
